Community member challenges Montclair's racial gap

We received an email from a Montclair resident who was very concerned about his city ranking the highest among all the cities in the Los Angeles area as far as the racial gap between the police department and the community. He forwarded us the email he sent to the members of the council, and one councilmember's response to that email. Here they are, redacted to as to protect his identity:

Groundbreaking study analyzes racial gap between PDs and communities, Inland ranks high

This study, by researchers at George Washington University, and then covered by the NY Times, is an important effort toward creating transparency about the nation's police forces and they ways in which they reflect--or don't--the communities they are supposed to serve. Prompted by the popular outcry criticizing the police murder of the young Michael Brown, an incident in which the racial gap has been named as a factor in the violence, this study highlights cities where the police force is not demographically representative of the community.

Riverside County inmates file class action suit

Just in case you thought it was just the sheriff's department in San Bernardino County that was abusing inmates, here is a fresh case in Riverside County. This is not so salacious as the scandal ripping through West Valley and beyond--this is just about inadequate health care, which is of course a grave concern.

Feds shoot and injure Arnulfo Hernandez in botched raid in Victorville

Victorville does not seem to be able to catch a break when it comes to police state violence. Perhaps that is why the San Bernardino Sheriff's Department was so quick to issue a press release denying any involvement in the affair. Later more details came out about who was involved. Upland considering police lapel cameras

Throughout the region, departments are either implementing body cameras, considering it, or being pressured to do so. Upland is the latest jurisdiction to officially consider requiring cameras as part of an officer's uniform. While remaining skeptical, we do hope that the added scrutiny will lead to a decrease in the sorts of shootings like the one Upland PD committed against Christian Rodriguez.
