Effectiveness of police commissions undermined by cops

Following up on our preliminary investigations into police commissions and their effectiveness in deterring police violence, we want to publish an excerpt from an email that was forwarded to us by a community supporter that talks about the make-up of the CPRC in Riverside. Some parts of the email that are not relevant to the discussion or that would unnecessarily reveal the identities of the correspondents has been redacted.

Imperial County sheriffs accuse Adrian Parra of having a gun

rQRo's picture

The latest development in the Adrian Parra case, where the family has been clamoring for answers, is an unfortunate but not unexpected one. As tends to be the case, rather than beginning an accountability process, the armed agents of the police state instead go on the offensive, making verbal warfare against their victim. This time they accuse the young brother of having a gun and "pointing it" at one of the deputies. They can disclose that, but still can't even say what the original reason for the traffic stop was?

Looking into police commissions...

rQRo's picture

Some communities who have dealt with police violence, and in particular those who have gone through large scandals, have sought to check the powers of their police forces by establishing oversight committees. These usually take the form of official city commissions, established by the city council itself.

We at CopWatch IE have been examining these reformist efforts to determine if they are effective at controlling the excesses of the police, at overseeing the forces, of imposing disciplinary measures, or at imposing transparency to break through the "blue code of silence."

This story has gotten some press, including TV coverage. The officer is claiming that the victim pulled an assault rifle on him. And despite apparently hitting him, the brother was still able to escape? Something doesn't quite add up here...

The editorial board of the local paper(s) of record, the Daily Bulletin and the Sun, published an editorial condemning the sheriff, under whose watch the inmate abuse at West Valley occurred, urging him to take responsibility. We support this call!
