Chino releases name of officer in collision

Responding to a state Public Records Act request filed by Champion Newspapers, the City of Chino released the name of a Chino police officer 16 days after he was involved in an on-duty car crash at Mountain and Schaefer avenues.

Officer Joshua Townsend, a 2 ½ year employee of the Chino Police Department, was identified Tuesday as the driver of a police unit that collided with a Honda Civic driven by Megan Cummings, 24, of Chino.

The city identified Ms. Cummings immediately following the Feb. 24 crash, but withheld Officer Townsend’s name on the grounds that the collision was under investigation.

Four people, including Officer Townsend, suffered minor injuries. All four were taken to hospital and later released, police said.

The officer’s patrol car was southbound on Mountain about 10:45 p.m. with lights and siren activated responding to a call of a possible suicidal person when it . . .
