Riverside sheriff's deputy tries to shoot family dog, shoots own leg instead

Finally, a little bit of justice in the news, even if that justice is of the poetic variety. This unidentified deputy, an agent of the court, was serving someone some paperwork over on the East Side when he got spooked by the dog, who was probably just trying to protect its family from the act of aggression like any good dog would. And the deputy, rather than dealing with the situation like a rational human being, opted to take out his weapon and shoot at the dog. However, due to factors unknown, although presumably not more than utter ineptitude, the officer shot only himself. Hopefully it hurt, because that is the only consequence he is likely to face. Usually they just get paid vacation as "recovery time" when they do stupid shit like this.

Here's a news clip from the P-E:

RIVERSIDE: Deputy accidentally shoots himself in leg

A deputy accidentally shot himself in the leg while trying to defend himself against an aggressive dog in Riverside, sheriff’s officials say.

The incident happened about 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 16, at a house along Eucalyptus Avenue near Third Street.

Assigned to a Riverside courthouse, the deputy was attempting to serve a legal document, said sheriff’s spokesman Deputy Armando Munoz.

“A dog came at the deputy in an aggressive manner,” Munoz said. “The deputy, (attempting to defend himself) pulled his service weapon, shot one round, and injured himself in the leg.

“He’s OK. He has non life-threatening injuries.”

The dog wasn’t hurt.

The sound of the gunfire ended the animal’s aggressive behavior, and the dog remained at the house, Munoz said.
