On May 21, 2012, at about 08:39 AM, officers from the Lake Elsinore Police Department responded to a report of a domestic violence call at the 33000 block of Olive Tree Lane, in Lake Elsinore.
When officers arrived, they spoke to the victim who stated that her estranged ex-boyfriend had just assaulted her. The victim also indicated that he was still inside of her residence, acting very agitated, erratic and made threats to harm himself.
Officers surrounded the residence and made several calls to the subject attempting to resolve the matter peacefully. The subject did not respond to the officers' requests to exit the residence. Fearing the subject may have harmed himself inside of the residence, officers entered the location to find out his status. When officers located the subject, he became violent toward the officers and an officer involved shooting ensued. One officer fired his service weapon at the subject, injuring him. The officers immediately provided medical assistance to the subject and requested for Cal-Fire and American Medical Response paramedics to provide medical treatment. No officers were injured during the incident.
The suspect who was later identified as twenty-eight-year-old resident of Lake Elsinore, Alejandro Lopez, received non-life-threatening injuries, and was transported to a local hospital.
Investigators from the Lake Elsinore Sheriff's Station and the Riverside County Sheriff's Central Homicide Unit were called out and assumed the investigation.
The deputies involved in the shooting were placed on paid administrative leave per department policy. The investigation is ongoing.
The Riverside County Sheriff's Department is encouraging anyone with information regarding this incident to contact Investigator Corey of the Riverside County Sheriff's Central Homicide Unit at 951-955-2777 or Investigator Cornett of the Lake Elsinore Sheriff's Station at 951-245-3300.
Again, no mention of any weapon, which means that he was likely unarmed. Just another incidence of officers overreacting and being just a little too quick on the trigger finger. At least it looks like this brother is going to survive.
