$7.8 million dollar award for man shot by RSD deputy

rQRo's picture

Here is an interesting case--not because of the circumstances or even because of the amount of the award, but rather because the court proceedings have revealed something about the character of the sheriff's department and the county. To quote the attorney in the case, "The county showed no interest in settling the case prior to trail, he said." This means that at numerous points during the process, when the county had the possibility of resolving the case out of court, they refused to do so.

Barstow officer Andrew Buesa cleared in shooting of Eddie Varela

rQRo's picture

This was an incident up in Barstow from last March. Intervening in a domestic situation, Officer Buesa shot and seriously injured the victim, Eddie Varela. What's worse, first they tried to charge Varela with attempted murder--then they dropped the charges down to assault with a deadly weapon and gave him a bunch of time. The story is published by the Desert Dispatch on their website:

Victim in High Desert police beating case sentenced

rQRo's picture

This is another somewhat older case that was just back in the news when the verdict against the victim was handed down this past November. The cops' version is told below by the corporate media, but the kid knew how to use his own voice, too. In sharp contrast to the official narrative, he tells of the police crashing into him, being brutally beaten without provocation, and being persecuted when he was being victimized. Here's the link to his video:

Murrieta jury convicts copwatcher for observing downtown Riverside checkpoint

rQRo's picture

This is a tragic update on a case we documented here back in May. It was one of CopWatch IE's first observation missions, of a downtown police checkpoint. It was also one of the first incidents of repression directed directly at Copwatchers for engaging in their constitutionally-protected right to observe and document police operations in public.
