Police beating in Pomona

rQRo's picture

A community Copwatcher reports that the day before yesterday, December 23, at about four o'clock in the afternoon, police severely beat the driver of a white vehicle that had been involved in a traffic stop. The stop, which occurred on Holt Blvd near Indian Hill (in the area where there are numerous businesses operated by members of the Vietnamese community). According to the witness, the driver was a Latino man, likely in his fifties or sixties. He had no visible tattoos or any other visible indication that he might have been involved in gangs or anything of that sort.

The Humane Society has been bothered by the noise coming from the Pomona PD's firing range, adjacent to the shelter, for quite some time now. Groundbreaking study analyzes racial gap between PDs and communities, Inland ranks high

This study, by researchers at George Washington University, and then covered by the NY Times, is an important effort toward creating transparency about the nation's police forces and they ways in which they reflect--or don't--the communities they are supposed to serve. Prompted by the popular outcry criticizing the police murder of the young Michael Brown, an incident in which the racial gap has been named as a factor in the violence, this study highlights cities where the police force is not demographically representative of the community.

Callers in the morning hours of Sunday, March 30, from the Angela-Chanslor neighborhood of South Pomona, reported that a police cruiser had been involved in a traffic accident and that there had been an injury. Upon further investigation, we learned that the victim was a homeless man named Michael, approximately in his mid-30s. Photos taken by neighbors showed a police cruiser half in the street and half on the sidewalk. Witnesses reported seeing the man, who had been riding his bicycle at the time, underneath the cruiser.

Pomona man responds violently to police encounter

While the vast majority of the incidents we document here involve the police using violence against the members of our community, on rare occasions do individuals actually strike back. This is what happened recently in Pomona, a city plagued by a corrupt and violent police force, when after an incident that is not divulged in the press, a man opened fire on the Pomona police station. I hope to find out the rest of the story; as we learn more, we'll post here. Until then, here is the story from the Daily Bulletin:

Officer Diamond of the Pomona PD harasses the homeless

rQRo's picture

We received a report from one of the members of the homeless community in Pomona about one particular officer who makes life difficult for him and other unhoused people in the Pomona area. The officer's name is Diamond--we have not yet been able to determine his first name or rank.

"Whenever he sees me he gives me a ticket. For loitering, littering, camping--whatever he can think of. Any excuse to get me a warrant and take me in."

The community member, who asked to remain anonymous for the purposes of this report, was sick of the mistreatment.
