Nepotism in Upland taints PD

rQRo's picture

There is an interesting phenomenon in law enforcement agencies in which family members of police and sheriff's departments are also hired on as staff. It is not clear whether these individuals are qualified for the job or if they are being shown any preference. It is also not clear whether this type of nepotism is legal. However, cases have surfaced continuously, usually in the press, and usually looked at in a favorable light, such as "honoring a family tradition," or how a family bod strengthens the work.

Throughout the region, departments are either implementing body cameras, considering it, or being pressured to do so. Upland is the latest jurisdiction to officially consider requiring cameras as part of an officer's uniform. While remaining skeptical, we do hope that the added scrutiny will lead to a decrease in the sorts of shootings like the one Upland PD committed against Christian Rodriguez. Here's a link to an article from the Daily Bulletin:

Upland PD shoots Christian Rodriguez 9 times

This is what you get for wandering into the wrong neighborhood at the wrong time when you're the wrong color. This is an upscale neighborhood just minutes away from the police station in Upland. Definitely a place where you'll get profiled for not "fitting in." Looks like that's what happened here, with the police first not knowing whether the brother was armed, and them being sure of it. The family says he wasn't armed, and the burden of proof is obviously on the cops. There have been two areticles in the Daily Bull:
